Review
Annie here!
This week I played Robert on Earth, a cozy farming simulator where you play as a robot managing a little farm in the middle of a wasteland.
Robert on Earth is a super calm game, perfect for folks who like to sit back and enjoy gaming with very little stress. Even the sound design is so calm. Five minutes into my session I had to grab myself a redbull because the relaxing wind and rain sounds were lulling me to sleep.
There's also a healthy serving of post-apocalypse story in this game. I didn't play for too long, but got enough tidbits that told me there's a lot of interesting lore to uncover.
Audio
As I mentioned already, the sound design is extremely calming in this game. I'd actually recommend it if you're having a hard time falling asleep. In the parts I played there was almost no music, so if you prefer a more naturalistic experience you might like that.
I will remind the reader that Robert on Earth takes place in a post-apocalypse wasteland, playing on the contrast between cozy farming and existential dread. Therefore the sound design does really send home the wasteland feel. The sounds of wind, rain, and dirt... it really feels like the opening scenes of Wall-E.
Graphics
Folks my age or older may feel nostalgic for the art style of Robert on Earth, as it strongly resembles that classic Newgrounds and Flash animation style from back in the day. The resemblance is especially uncanny in cutscenes, so if you're missing that era I'd definitely recommend giving this game a go.
Gameplay
The gameplay here is tried and true farming sim stuff, so it doesn't take long to learn. If you hate tutorials, you're in good hands here. Robert on Earth does have some unique mechanics, though. I think the fishing system is far more fun and satisfying than most, and there's some strategy involved with growing and mutating your crops. But really I think the uniqueness in this game is the story and setting. If you visited Dirtmouth in Hollow Knight and thought "I'd love to start a wholesome little farm here!" then this game is for you. Final Thoughts
Robert on Earth is a great game for lovers of chill farming sims. Its Indie-ness shows in the level design and art style, but not at all in the amount of content. So if you want a game you can enjoy for a while, I think it's a good choice.
Robert on Earth is available on Steam for $10.49.
