Review
Annie here!
This week's game is a truly special one.
In Other Waters is a sci-fi game in which you are an AI operating system assisting a stranded scientist on an alien planet. The game is entirely played through the user interface of the dive suit, making you feel like you're embodying this mysteriously thoughtful OS.
This game presents so many eerie and intriguing mysteries to uncover. How did this ecosystem evolve? What happened to your missing colleague? And why are you, an AI, so... human? Graphics
This
game is a rare example of a UI-based game with a truly unique style
that somehow feels immersive, even though you're technically just
clicking in menus. Whether you're a developer or a player, I think everyone deserves to play this game to see how impressive UI-based games can really be.
The
world you explore is somehow filled with life and colour and movement,
even though all of this is expressed through symbology and text logs.
It's really quite impressive. Audio
The sound design in this game is near-perfect. It creates a beautiful atmosphere that is at times curious and sweet, but often eerie with just the right touch of unnerving. There is background music here and there, but it's mostly unnoticeable compared to the watery sounds of alien life that surround you. For me, there were times the atmostphere was so immersive, I had to remind myself that the Steam description calls it a "non-violent sci-fi story."
Gameplay
The gameplay in In Other Waters is very simple. The UI is brilliantly designed so you can trust me, you really won't need any help figuring it out. I love when a game has controls so intuitive, you won't even notice there's no tutorial. This game is very relaxing so a sleepy gal like me played it for about 20-40 minute sessions, but if you like chill gaming you'll love it. Plus if you use a mouse, you only need one hand, so you can comfortably cuddle a cat or eat a slice of cake if you're feeling the vibe.
Final Thoughts
In Other Waters is one of those games that not EVERYBODY should play, but MOST people should play. At least listen to the sound design in the trailer before you make your decision. I think you'll love it.
In Other Waters is currently on sale for $4.87 CAD.
