Trick or Treat

» Horror | Halloween | Narrative

On Halloween, everyone wants candy, and everyone dresses up to look scary—but can you tell the difference when something truly terrifying actually happens?

Review

Sasha here! 👋

It's getting close to Halloween and I wanted to play something a little spooky today :)

"Trick or Treat" caught my eye with its art style. With its lowpoly gritty-grainly style I had a strong feeling the game was going to meet my expectations.

The game follows a character named Michael that's heading home on Halloween to take care of his parents house.

You're met with chores you have to complete before bed; turning lights on, cleaning up garbage, putting candy out for Trick-or-Treaters, etc. During this I felt a feeling of unease build as things just got weirder as the night went on.

The game for the most part had me feeling the right amount of spook. The only critique I have (which is more likely an issue with the genre itself) is when you die the tension the game worked so hard to build is dissipated and lost. This made the ending lose a little of its potential umph.

    Final Thoughts

Trick or Treat is a great example of how understanding a genre is the first step to creating good games in that genre. This is the creator's first game! (Nasu173). Their BiliBili profile makes it obvious they're a huge fan of horror games.

If you want to try it out it's available on Itch for free as a Unity build.

You can play through it in about 20 minutes.
