Review

Hey all, Annie here ๐Ÿ˜Ž

This week I played Formless Star, a game about cataloguing creatures as an astronaut on a constantly changing planet.

Now, let me be clear, when I say "creatures," I really mean "weird little dudes." And when I say "astronaut," I really mean "anthropomorphized wind instrument."

If that didn't make my thesis statement clear enough, I'll spell it out for you: This game is very silly and very worth the 1-2 hours it'll take you to play it.

Formless Star does not take itself seriously, and I love it for that. It's filled with quirky Undertale-style humor and sweet moments you'll want to screenshot and send to your group chat without context.

The designs in this game are so precious and the art style is perfectly crafted. Think Bigtop Burger meets Don't Hug Me I'm Scared meets Pingu. Yes that's insane and yes it's perfect.

Final Thoughts

Formless Star has 61 creatures to discover, and during my playthrough I found myself wondering if it would be worth it to find them all. Well, I did, and I can tell you firsthand that it is. The "true ending" introduces you to a character who reminds you why we make and play games in the first place. It left me feeling pretty dang good about my place in the universe and I think it can do that for you, too.

Formless Star is free on Itch (unless you decide to make a donation!), and the rest of Splendidland's work is great, too. I, personally, can't wait to see what they come up with next.

Next up...

Sasha will return to you on Friday with a very successful (but still indie!) dungeon crawler released earlier this year. Stay tuned to hear all about it!

See ya next time!
