Review
Sasha here! 👋 (with a little help from Annie)
I played FlyKnight recently and and it's exactly what I expected: a souls-like, runescape-inspired, gritty RPG. It's also pretty quick and has multiplayer as a bonus.
Story
As far as low-poly bug games go, this one is definitely more serious than you'd probably expect. It takes places in a world wracked by war and death (and racism???). The story's pretty good, but if you're playing FlyKnight that's probably not what you're looking for.
Combat
Combat is where FlyKnight shines. There's a huge selection of weapons to choose from, and each of them is probably somebody's favourite. The Scorpion Naginata was mine. The Morning Star uses a "head bonk" attack, which is pretty cool, but I prefer the Naginata's 4 different attacks which made targeting specific limbs much easier (I could also attack from a much safer distance too). That reminds me: you can cut off the bugs' limbs in this game. I repeat: YOU CAN CUT OFF LIMBS.
Final Thoughts
If you like Dark Souls but don't want to play it you should definitely check out FlyKnight. It doesn't have an EXP system which really helps make it more digestible/approachable. Especially for those unfamiliar with leveling up characters... or if you're like me and find it a little intimidating.
My suggestion would be to get your friends together and play through multiplayer together. There's so much to comment on while you play, FlyKnight definitely deserves a peanut gallery.
PS: there's also fishing.
