Review

Sasha here! ๐Ÿ‘‹

Tearscape caught my eye recently when a friend shared it in our Discord. It's very much like if the Dark Souls was made for the Game Boy. It has strong Zelda vibes, is non-linear, and is a very action heavy game that requires some skillful maneuvers.

I was playing the demo, but I still managed to have a good time exploring the world, slaying Nerds, and just overall trying to piece together the mystery of whatever was going on.

Quite a few times I found myself at a particular 'dead-end' where I knew I was just missing some key information (or sometimes a new ability) to progress. Other times, I was swapping out my gear to strategize my approach to different enemies.

Just think about the equipment and souls in the Souls games, the exploration in a Zelda-like, the backtracking in a Metroidvania, and you have what this game is. It's awesome to see this game with such positive reviews (currently at 93% positive). You can tell it was made from a place of passion and not from a profit seeking motive. These types of games aren't ones you make to make bank.

Audio

The audio is also very Game Boy inspired. I wish it could have been a little more textured but overall the I appreciate the effort in synthesising the Game Boy aesthetic.

Final Thoughts

The only thing that didn't fit in with the Game Boy aesthetic was the screen aspect ratio. I can forgive this though. Having worked on Game Boy inspired games I appreciate the choice of avoiding pillarboxing.

If you're into Dark-Souls, like the retro vibes, and want something that can be played in shorter play sessions (comparatively to Dark-Souls) then maybe go check it out!

Other News

Last Saturday we released a video on YouTube where I play Outer Wilds. We had lost all the gameplay audio but we somehow managed to make something that I think turned out pretty well, considering!

Since we record multiple videos in a single session we had unfortunately lost the audio to other videos we had planned. One is not salvageable but the other is planned to be released soon. In it Annie plays The Art of Reflection, which we had covered in a previous newsletter

Annie should be back with another newsletter this Friday ahead of the new view release so keep an eye open for that! :)

Talk soon,
