Review

Annie again!

I had to hunt all day for this one. Just when I thought I'd have to settle for a student project or an unpolished jam game, Moon Rats appeared. It's the creator's first project, made as an experiment; but it's polished, bug-free, and a lot of fun.

Gameplay

If you're on your lunch break, be careful deciding to play this game. Once I started it was nearly impossible to stop. All you do is select a ship, then start flying and shooting. The bugs you kill drop little nuggets (that's just what I'm calling them) that you can consume to fill up the bar at the top of the screen. Once the bar is full, you can choose an upgrade from three random options. Do you need a stronger shield? More health? Faster movement? A bigger gun? The options are endless. I found myself prioritizing movement speed to help manage the insane hordes of bugs.

Speaking of hordes, that's the interesting thing about Moon Rats. There's almost no strategy when it comes to attacking bugs. They all end up clumping together and chasing you down like angry sheep. All you can do is keep a safe distance and keep shooting at them. This makes it so satisfying when you get to loop around and scoop up all the nuggets they've dropped for you.

Notes

I played as Nadia, the power rat. She had a good balance of speed and strength that I enjoyed. I tried to play as Aurora but found that she was just too slow to survive. I haven't tried the other rats, so maybe you should give them a try when you pick up Moon Rats!

Moon Rats doesn't have any ending that I know of. Just play it for a bit and put it down when you're satisfied! (Or when it's time to clock back on.)

Final Thoughts

Moon Rats is a great way to let off some steam. It's downloadable on Itch.io and it's only one executable file, so there's no tedious unzipping to do! Give it a try and leave a comment to let the creator know we sent you!

Coming Up...

On Friday I'll be back with another Steam game. I haven't decided which one yet but there's a couple that I'm REALLY excited about so I can't wait!

See you then,
Annie
