The Royal Writ

» Deck Builder | Roguelike | Charming

Sacrifice creates stories in this medieval roguelike deckbuilder. Watch your cards march to glory or permanent death as they battle toward the enemy.

A New Deckbuilder

Sasha here! 👋

This game is cute. With very cute animations.

I found this game through Itch but as luck would have it the game had a Steam page as well. I played through the Itch version then tried out the Steam demo. It was cool to see how the game progressed from a game jam game to a full product. (It released yesterday, August 7th)

I essentially got a very condensed view on how the game evolved from a high level in the span of a week.

The mechanics are simple. Place your soldiers in a lane and they advance each turn, dealing damage to your enemy. There are multipliers, card abilities, and status effects. Some of the cards in your deck gain a sort of character/identity. They become heros that come in at the right times to save the day.

What I liked...

The music in this game flows smoothly from scene to scene and beautifully compliments the visual aesthetics of the game. There's a great deal of polish in this game. The texture of the lines that make up the art, the paper-like feel of the graphics, the game just has character.

Very picture book vibes.

I didn't play it long enough to get a good feel for the strategy of the game but I can see later parts of the game being intense with hard decisions, sacrifices, and just plain ol'bad luck.

I'll be saving this one for another day where I can enjoy it with a friend.

If you're a fan of deck builders/roguelikes I'd love to know your thoughts. Find it on Steam and maybe send me an email :)

Öoo

Öoo has released! It was definitely one of my favourite games so far out of the ones I've covered in the newsletter. So I thought I'd pass the news along. If you didn't get the original email you can read it on our website.

Looking Ahead

I should be able to pick out a GMTK Game Jam game for next Tuesday now that it's settled down a bit. Maybe if you have any recommendations I'd love to check those out.

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what was made (my head's been sort of in the sand with respect to the jam)

Talk soon,
