Hollowspire

» Clicker | Mining | Stylistic

A chill, clicker-inspired game where you dig through blocks of dirt and stone, craft, and upgrade your abilities — all in pursuit of reaching the depths and uncovering its mysteries.

Review

Sasha here! 👋

Hollowspire greets you with the sounds of a calming guitar and a soft humming voice. I sat on the starting screen to take it in. The art style impressed me. It almost felt like I shouldn't be digging.

In this game you dig. You dig down. Far down.

As you get further down dissonant tones replace the music adding a sense unease the deeper you dig. What's down there? What's the music telling me?

The music was telling me to rush. To dig faster.

As for what's down there, I guess you'll have to find out ;)

Here are things I liked about the game:

  • The effect the music had. It delivered an ever growing sense anticipation and urgency.
  • The art style was simple but well done. Reminded me of Google SketchUp.
  • Once you get to the bottom you can restart from the top with all of your upgrades. I played through 3 times. It started to take too long to get upgrades the 4th time around.

What are some things I wish I knew?

  • It's much easier to get money earlier on; some blocks drop money, some drop gems/iron. The deeper you go the less money blocks there are so there's a noticeable slowdown as you get deeper.
  • The miners mine for you but not like how you'd expect. They only mine one block per row and you have to clear the whole row before they will continue. Since I felt money got tight later on I sort of wished I had invested in the auto clicker upgrades instead.

Takeaway

Overall the game is pretty fun. I mean, it's pretty impressive for a jam game. I can see the vision and where it's going. It will be interesting to see what the the Steam release version will be like.

As for the demo you can likely clear the game in 20-30 minutes. If you're into clicker games I'd recommend you check it out. Just know that it is not an idle clicker ;)

Looking Ahead

The game was made for Ludum Dare #67 by Mathias L. and Matthiew Houllier. There's an announced release for Steam (date unknown). I suspect the release version will add many quality of life features and improve some existing mechanics. We'll just have to wait and see :)

I'll be back with another email on Friday. I don't have hints today on what the game will be though. 🤫
