Review
Dawn of Defense is a gorgeous, Norse mythology-inspired tower defense game with RTS elements. My first couple runs I made some rookie mistakes, but once I started to get the hang of the strategy I really enjoyed it. Even though this is just a demo, and their timeline shows it's quite early on, I found each run was more fun than the last.
Every time I restarted, the layout of the map changed slightly, which completely altered my strategy. And even in its early stages the game introduces just the right amount of randomness to the progression, so no run is the same as the one before.
I was completely shocked at how bug-free this demo was. Normally a game this early on has barely refined their gameplay loop, never mind making it smooth and intuitive to play. But Dawn of Defense is different. They seem to be experts at bug squashing and intuitive design, because even though a tutorial was provided, I never felt I needed it. Everything on screen was either obvious or clearly explained, so I never got frustrated!
What's more, the game is gorgeous. You can tell that the art direction is clear and focused, the style is really well defined.
Overall, I'm blown away by the quality level of this game. The dev team is only 5 people, they're new-ish to the industry, and it's their first project together... BUT they've got a clear timeline to release, a fun, bug-free demo, and an entire press kit on their website. They clearly know what they're doing.
