Review

Sasha here! ๐Ÿ‘‹

Today we have a side scrolling twin stick shooter with tower defense style resource management. At first I was hesitant to try this one out since I'm not very good at either of those genres but got I sucked right in. The game loop itself is layered, where players survive a day-night cycle: gathering, collecting, and clearing out the area during the day, and then hunkering down at base camp, defending the fire throughout the night. Once the area is clear, players return to a place called The Eternal Flame. This is where you upgrade your weapons and new features for your base.

It's a tough game, when you lose a round you get sent back to The Eternal Flame where you level up and try again... needing to start the round over again. Fortunately, you get to keep the "gems" you find from the level which are used to buy upgrades... making it easier the next time. This allows for some auto balancing of the difficulty. However, some reviews I read criticized the game for being slow. I can see where they're coming from since a single round can last between 20-30 minutes with 3-5 day-night cycles in it. I'm sure the variety later on in the game makes up for it since there'll be many more things to manage.

Final Thoughts

The game has a free demo on steam. I played it for around 2 hours last night. The price is sitting at $21.59 CAD discounted 10% ($23.99 undiscounted). You might like this game if you're into twin stick shooters mixed with a little bit of tower defense style resource management. Just be prepared that it's not anywhere as fast paced as The Binding of Isaac; there's much more strategy involved. The demo certainly has enough content in it for you to make that choice confidently.

Oh, and yes, you can pet the dog.

Coming Up...

Annie's going to be back with another game on Friday. We have a few picked out... just have to lock one in. ;)
