Review
Annie again!
If there's one thing you take away from this newsletter, it should be this: PLAY HEX DIE.
Just trust me. This game seems like it has a lot going on but it's truly easy to figure out and delightful to play. It's the perfect balance of easy to learn, but complex enough to challenge you. I could seriously waste away my whole work day on this game.
Concept
I'll be honest, I barely read the description and instructions before playing this game, I just jumped right in and had a blast.
If you ask me, all you need to know is the controls: arrow keys to move and X button to confirm. After that, it all becomes clear! That's the great thing about Hex Die, it's well designed so it's easy to grasp what's going on. Every detail is there for a reason, whether it's to communicate what's happening or just to make you feel epic.
BUT if you're curious about the mechanics, there is a good amount of stuff going on behind the scenes. Essentially you roll a 6-sided die to decide what ability you can use, then time pauses until you move or use that ability. You spend each round moving tile to tile avoiding attacks, while laying out your own attacks upon your enemies.
Personally, I completely ignored the time stopping ability. The effects in the game are so good, it doesn't take any extra time to decide what to do. You can just go, go, go, which I think is what makes it fun. It's not turn based, so DPS is based entirely on how fast YOU are. It really makes you feel like you're laying waste to your enemies with lethal precision.
Final Thoughts
Play Hex Die! It's free on Itch.io and you can play it in your browser. It also takes about 30 seconds to learn! Just play it!
